PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a durable red fluorescent dye expressing strong luminance and good solubility and as a dye for organic EL having good subliming properties and high heat resistance. SOLUTION: This coumarin-based compound is a compound expressed by formula I (Z1 to Z4 are each N or C, at least one of them is N; R1 to R4 are each H, a halogen, cyano, nitro or the like, but when they are bonded with N, they are not substituted; R5 to R8 are each a 1-6C alkyl; X is O, S, NH or the like; Y is O, NH or the like). The compound expressed by formula I is obtained by reacting the compound expressed by formula II with a cyanide expressed by the formula MCN (M is H, Na, K or Cu) and further oxidizing the reacted product with an oxidizer. E.g. the compound expressed by formula II is dissolved in dimethyformamide, mixed with sodium cyanide and agitated and further mixed with a dimethylformamide solution containing bromine and agitated. Thus, a red colorant having fluorescence of high luminance is provided.
