PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-soluble polymer among those exhibiting various solution thermal behaviors by free radical-initiated polymerization between a macromonomer having polymerizable terminal group, specific hydrophilic segment and specific hydrophobic segment and a specific olefinically unsaturated comonomer. SOLUTION: This water-soluble polymer is obtained by free radical-initiated polymerization between (A) a macromonomer having polymerizable terminal group, polyalkylene oxide-based hydrophilic segment and hydrophobic segment having hydrogen or (un)saturated linear or branched, aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic 1-30C hydrocarbon group, e.g. an ester of (meth)acrylic acid and a 10-18C aliphatic alcohol polyglycol ether having eight EO units and (B) an olefinically unsaturated comonomer having oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, phosphorus, chlorine and/or fluorine atom(s), e.g. acrylamidopropylmethylenesulfonic acid.
