PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for cleaning exhaust gas, which is able to rapidly and effectively clean harmful components, especially HC in the exhaust gas even from a low temperature atmosphere like in a period immediately after an internal combustion engine has started and which is excellent in high temp. durability and capable of maintaining the cleaning performance for a long period of time. SOLUTION: In a device 1 useful for cleaning an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine 2 and having a main catalyst 12 which exhibits relatively high exhaust gas cleaning performance in a high temp. region and a warm-up catalyst 11 which exhibits relatively high exhaust gas cleaning performance in a temp. region lower than that of the main catalyst 12 and in which a coated layer containing at least one noble metal is formed on a heat resistant supporting carrier, ZrO2 or a complex oxide containing ZrO2 is added into the coated layer in such a state that at least one noble metal of Pt, Rh and Pd is loaded in the coated layer. Preferably, Pd is used as the noble metal and at least one element selected from the group comprising Ba, Ca, Cs, K, Mg and La is further added in the form of sulfate, nitrate or acetate into the coated layer. |
