PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently obtaining an asymmetric dihydroxylated oleffin useful as a biologically active chiral molecule, capable of recovering and reusing an osmium by reacting an olefin in the presence of a specific polymer chiral ligand, an osmium-containing catalyst, etc. SOLUTION: An olefin (e.g. trans-stilbene) is combined with a polymer ligand in which a chiral ligand is an alkaloid or an alkaloid derivative, an organic solvent (e.g. acetone), an aqueous solution, a base, an osmium-containing catalyst and potassium ferricyanide. The obtained combination is maintained in a condition suitable for causing asymmetric dihydroxylation of the olefin to give an asymmetrically dihydroxylated olefin. The alkaloid is a dihydroquinidine aryl ether derivative or a dihydroquinine aryl ether derivative. This method is preferably carried out at about 40 to about -30 deg.C.
