VIDEO DECODING METHOD AND SYSTEM

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a video decoding method and a system that can decode video coded data so as to lose data in the case of high speed reproduction or high speed reverse reproduction of video data in a program stream in compliance with the MPEG standards. SOLUTION: In the case of separating and extracting a video elementary stream 18 from a segmented VOBU 16, a system decoder 12 inserts an attached code for start code error correction after a picture start code. In the case of decoding the video elementary stream 18, a video decoder 15 discriminates whether or not 4-byte data in succession to the picture start code are coincident with the start code of a sequence. When they are coincident, succeeding data are used for a sequence layer of a segmented VOBU 16 received next to apply decoding to data of a succeeding picture. In the case of dissidence, the attached code for start code error correction that is unnecessary data is eliminated.
