PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient method for applying error protection to data. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a mechanism for applying error protection to data to be stored in a data storage system 10 in which the data are stored in a data sector 22 inside a data storage area 16 and redundant information for applying error protection to data are stored in a redundant sector 24 inside a redundant storage area 18. New data to be written in a specified data sector 22 and to be error-protected by redundant information are received and error correction information for the new data is selectively stored in an additional storage area to apply error protection to the new data. The error protection is executed instead of the correction of the redundant information.
