PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an interpolation method and an interpolation circuit for an optical encoder and other detectors that are relatively simple and inexpensive and are capable of obtaining a. SOLUTION: An interpolation circuit in an encoder includes a signal generating circuit 140 to which four ramp signals A, A', B, B' are inputted. The signal generating circuit 140 provides ramp signals of A, A', A'/3, B, B', B'/3 to a comparator circuit 142. The comparator circuit 142 compares signals forming selected pairs from inputted signals each other and generates eight intermediate signals and outputs signals, which have four cycles per cycle of inputted ramp signals and whose phases are shifted by 1/4 cycle, to channels A, B. These signals can set up resolution of 16 conditions per cycle.
