PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make avoidable adverse effect of a cross talk from adjacent tracks during recording and reproduction in three and five fold modes by specifying the relationship between the head width of head pair B and a track pitch in a five fold long duration mode and the relationship of the head width of head pair D used for recording and reproducing in the five fold long duration mode among a head group A. SOLUTION: The device has a head group A which has more than one head pairs used for mainly recording and reproducing video signals and for special reproduction and corresponds to a recording mode that is capable of conducting a long duration recording that is two to three times longer than a standard recording mode, and head pairs B which mainly record and reproduce audio signals. The head width of the head pairs B has a relationship Twb<=2×Px with a track pitch Px in a five fold long duration recording mode and the head width Twd of head pairs D, which conduct recording and reproduction in five fold and longer duration recording modes among the group A, has a relationship Twd<=2×Px. Having completed the above constitution, picking up of adjacent track signals is prevented while conducting three and five fold mode recording and reproduction.
