The invention concerns a method which consists, during the engine starting phase, in supplying a first group of cylinders with a lean mixture and a second group of cylinders with a rich mixture. The invention is characterised in that the method further consists in supplying said first group of cylinders with a stratified mixture and said second group of cylinders with a homogeneous mixture.
