PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the friction with a magnetic head smaller and to make durability excellent by providing a magnetic recording medium with a magnetic film of a granular structure having good smoothness. SOLUTION: A ground surface film 2 is formed on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 and the magnetic film 3 of the granular structure is formed on the ground surface film 2 by a sputtering method using a target consisting of a mixture composed of a ferromagnetic material and a nonmagnetic material of <=106Ωcm in electric resistance or a binary sputtering method using a target consisting of the ferromagnetic material and a target consisting of the nonmagnetic material of <=106Ωcm in electric resistance. A protective film 4 is disposed thereon, to obtain the magnetic recording medium.
