PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an apparatus and a method for evaluating an image capable of objectively evaluating a resolution representing a subjective sharpness of an image. SOLUTION: The apparatus 10 for evaluating an image comprises a data holding means 11 for holding image data to output a pattern image having different dark and light density at random in one-dimensional direction, a data acquiring means 12 for outputting the image data to an image output unit 20 to and reading the pattern image after the outputting, an MTF analyzing means 14 for calculating MTF characteristics from the image data output to the unit 20 and the image data read by the means 12, a pixel size estimating means 15 for estimating the pixel size of the output image from the calculated MTF characteristics, and an index calculating means 16 for calculating an index representing resolution capability of the unit 20 from the estimated pixel size. |
