PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent transfer scattering as a consequence of preliminary transferring by eliminating the upstream side gap nip on a primary transferring part. SOLUTION: An excellent image is obtained by preventing transfer scattering as a consequence of the preliminary transfer by eliminating the upstream side gap nip of the primary transferring part N1 by means of lifting the intermediate transfer belt 17 to ward a photoreceptor drum 11a side by a belt lifting roller 27a on the upstream side of the primary transferring part N1, so that a belt/ roller nip B formed between a primary transfer roller 15a and the intermediate transfer belt 17 is prevented from protruding out roward the upstream side of the traveling direction of the intermediate transfer belt 17 and out of the drum/belt nip A between the photoreceptor drum 11a and the intermediate transfer belt 17, in the primary transferring part N1.
