PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a control method and a material-testing device for performing control so that the amplitude of load fluctuation being applied to a test piece becomes a target value more accurately. SOLUTION: A digital target load signal Yi of a sinusoidal wave is generated, and pull and compression loads are alternately and repeatedly applied to a material test piece 9 by a load-applying device 6 based on the target load signal. Then, the load of the material test piece is detected by a sensor 11, a detection load signal Y0 is multiplied by a sinusoidal wave value, high-frequency components are eliminated before being squared for obtaining the first square value, and at the same time the detection load signal is multiplied by a cosine wave value, high-frequency components are eliminated before being squared for obtaining the second square value, the first and second square values are added, the square of the added value is doubled, an amplitude B of the detection load signal is obtained, and the amplitude of the target load signal is corrected so that the amplitude of the detection load signal becomes a target amplitude M.
