PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable suitable gray compensation to any image by converting the color of a pixel showing the achromatic color in an inputted color image to one prescribed color component only and controlling whether or not conversion is to be performed corresponding to whether an object showing a multi-level image in the relevant color image is composed of pixels having prescribed luminance or not. SOLUTION: A command discriminating part 1102 of a printer (LBP) 1000 for receiving print data from a host computer 2000 discriminates respective print control commands and the corresponding to each command, the print data are analyzed in a command analytic part 1103. This analyzed command is converted into the intermediate code of a form easier to process by a command executing part 1104. When it is discriminated in the command discriminating part 1102 the print control command is a command with expansion to the intermediate code of character or graphic, in a gray compensation control part 1106, the gray compensation is controlled.
