PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a paper sheet reader which can expand a handled area, without causing the capacity of a character dictionary memory to increase. SOLUTION: An integrated dictionary 31, where character patterns included in location information in object areas to be recognized are integrated without overlapping with one another is prepared and stored in a character dictionary memory 32. When specific information on a paper sheet P is read, its read contents are matched against the integrated dictionary 31 in the character dictionary memory 32 to recognize the read contents.
