PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically prepare a rough template that is optimum to a rough matching operation. SOLUTION: This rough template preparing method prepares a detailed template for performing a detailed matching operation from the image data of an object to be identified (step 2) and also a rough template for performing a rough matching operation by using a part of the area of the detailed template, calculates characteristic quantity representing the fluctuation of a pixel value in the neighborhood area of each pixel from the data of the detailed template (step 3), evaluates the characteristic quantity according to prescribed decision reference (step 4) and adopts the data of an area meeting the decision reference or an area including the neighborhood pixel of the area as a rough template (step 12).
