PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a silver halide photographic sensitive material suitable for rapid processing and bringing a silver color tone nearly to a pure black tone while retaining high covering power without deteriorating residual color by incorporating specified silver halide grains into a silver halide emulsion layer and a specified compound into constituent layers. SOLUTION: The silver halide photographic sensitive material has at least one photosensitive silver halide emulsion layer containing silver halide grains having an average aspect ratio of >=3 and <=0.6μm volume average grain diameter and contains a compound of the formula in at least one of the constituent layers. In the formula, M is H or an alkali metal atom, X1-X4 are each a halogen, Y1-Y5 are each H or an arbitrary substituent, at least one of Y1-Y5 is -COOR and R is H or an alkali metal atom. When the average aspect ratio of the silver halide grains is <3 or the volume average grain diameter of the grains is >0.6μm, satisfactory covering power may not be ensured.
