PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make surely determinable the position of a sheet to be scanned at a specified holding position by pressing the trailing edge part in the carrying-in direction of the sheet to be scanned in the carrying-in direction by a trailing edge positioning means and positioning the sheet to be scanned in a state where it abuts on the trailing edge positioning means. SOLUTION: A controller 26 inputs the detected result from a photosensor 23 and stops the carrying-in operation of the sheet 10 by a carrying roller 21. As a result, the sheet 10 is stopped on a circular-arc supporting surface 24a. Continuously, the controller 26 turns a trailing edge pushing-up lever 25 in a direction shown by an arrow so that the surface in the turning direction of the lever 25 presses the trailing edge part 10b of the sheet 10 in the carrying-in direction of the sheet 10 while abutting on the trailing edge part 10b by such turning. Thus, the trailing edge part 10b in the carrying-in direction of the sheet 10 is made in the abutting state on the lever 25, so that the trailing edge part 10b of the sheet 10 is always stopped at a position where the lever 25 is stopped in the carrying-in direction, and the sheet 10 is always accurately positioned at a fixed position (holding position).
