A communication system for use in a wellbore, a downhole tool, and a method includes a transmitter coupled to a wireline, and a receiver located remotel y from the transmitter. The wireline is capable of acting as an antenna for th e transmitter. The wireline is a slickline, and the transmitter may be associated with, provided on, or an integral part of a downhole tool or tool string. The transmitter typically transmits data collected or generated by t he downhole tool or the like to the receiver, which is preferably located at, o r near, the surface of the wellbore. The wireline is typically provided with a n insulating coating. Also, a distance measurement apparatus and a method for measuring the distance travelled by a wireline includes at least one sensor coupled to the wireline, and the sensor is capable of sensing known location s in a wellbore.
