<p>The present invention relates to a bone plating system and method for fracture fixation of bone. The bone plating system includes a bone plate (30; 50; 80), at least one locking screw (20), and at least one non-locking screw (10). The bone plate (30; 50; 80) has locking holes (36; 56; 86) with threads (40) and non-locking holes (38; 58; 88). The locking screws (20) have a shaft (26) with a thread for engaging bone and a head (22) with a thread (24) configured and dimensioned to mate with the thread (40) of the locking holes (36; 56; 86). The non-locking screws (10) have a thread for engaging bone and a non-threaded head (12). Both the locking and non-locking screws (20; 10) remain seated in their respective holes (36; 56; 86; 38; 58; 88) for substantially as long as the bone plate (30; 50; 80) is implanted. The non-locking screws (10) compress the bone plate (30; 50; 80) against the bone and hold fracture reduction while the locking screws (20) are secured to the plate at a fixed angular relationship. The mixed fixation achieved by this bone plating system and method is particularly useful for treatment of per-articular fractures.</p> |
