The invention relates to a device which detects a desired distance or a desired time gap in relation to a vehicle ahead according to the driving speed. A minimum distance or a minimum time gap that can be pre-determined by the driver is considered by the distance control device when the desired distance or the desired time gap is detected. During bad visibility conditions (bad weather, darkness), the distance control device increases the desired distance or the desired time gap which has been detected for normal visibility conditions because the driver perceives the distance according to the current visibility conditions.
