In a method for producing toughened glass comprising a heat treatment step of heating a glass material (1) to thereby transform NiS in the glass material (1) from alpha phase to beta phase, an inspection step of detecting the Nis particles present in the glass material (1) having a particle diameter of a given value or more, and a thermally toughening step of subjecting the glass material (1) being free of Nis particles having a particle diameter of a given value or more to a thermally toughening treatment, an improvement wherein the inspection step comprises irradiating an X-ray to the glass material (1) from the side of one surface of the glass material (1), while detecting the X-ray at the side of the other surface of the glass material (1). The method including the improvement enables the measurement of the mass of contaminants in the glass material (1).
