PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating surface defects inspecting illuminating method and device which projects a patterned image, which can be inspected with more uniform detection accuracy and effectively on a coating surface as an inspection object. SOLUTION: In a screen in which a patterned image is projected on an inspection object surface, with a regular triangle which changes brightness value gradually from one bottom side to a top in parallel to the bottom side and opposing thereto as a basic element, the six basic elements of the triangle are arranged with the top in common, to form a regular hexagon, and also a plurality of pattern shapes disposed adjacent to the regular hexagon are adapted.
