The aim of the invention is to operate an NOx catalyst in the exhaust-gas section of an internal combustion engine. To this end, the real efficiency (NOx2/NOx1) is detected and compared to a desired efficiency (H_S) that is dependent upon the working temperature. Dosage of the reduction means is carried out in such a way that the real efficiency (NOx2/NOx1) approaches the desired efficiency (H_S).
