The control system has a pump (16) for delivering hydraulic fluid under pressure from a reservoir to operate a hydraulic actuator (24), a main flow control valve (22) between the pump and actuator for selectively delivering fluid to the actuator and carrying it away and a control unit (14) connected to the main control valve to control the rate of change of the cross-section of the main flow control valve.
