The IC engine has an exhaust gas flap (1) between a catalyser (3,3') and the exhaust muffler (5,5') in the exhaust gas line (2) for regulating the exhaust counter-pressure, with an engine control unit coupled to the exhaust gas line and an air mass sensor. The engine control unit has a safety device comparing the actual air flow rate with a required value provided by an engine characteristic field. An Independent claim for a control method for an IC engine is also included.
