Monitoring of properties on running yarn, e.g. at open-end spinning, includes identification of faults from shape of parameter trace

A property parameter, e.g. thickness, of a running yarn (14) is continuously measured by a sensor (18) and a fault indicated when threshold values are exceeded. The nature of the fault is identified by comparing the shape of the parameter trace over a certain length with sample types of traces held in memory. An automatic remedial sequence can be initiated when the fault has been recognized.
