The invention relates to a magneto-optic switching element, comprising a Faraday rotator. In order to increase the switching speed and to reduce the required switching power, the rotator consists of a magnetically monoaxial crystal which has magnetic domains of both signs of polarity in each of its stable states. Problems associated with the creation of domains with differe nt respective signs of polarity at the start of the switch-over process are avoided using the inventive switching element.
