BINDER MECHANISM

A binder mechanism (10) comprises a pair of prong plates (14 and 16) pivotally connected by a retainer spring (12) to toggle between a first raised position and a second lowered position. The prong plates (14 and 16) include a plurality of ring segments (18 and 20) affixed to the prong plates (14 and 16) that are capable of forming loops. A cam mechanism (26) is used to toggle the prong plates (14 and 16) between the raised and lowered positions causing the ring segments (18 and 20) to open or to close to form loops. The cam mechanism (26) is preferably a slider (26) located above the prong plates (14 and 16), the slider (26) having ramps (28) inserted recesses (30) between the prong plates (14 and 16). Preferably, the recesses (30) are located adjacent to where the ring segments (18 and 20) are attached to the prong plates (14 and 16). Cleats (22) may hold the parts of the binder mechanism (10) together and keep the mechanism attached to a binder assembly.
