Systems and methods for igniting fuel in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine having at least one combustion chamber utilizing a traveli ng spark ignitor having at least two electrodes are disclosed. The ignitor is arranged in the combustion chamber such that ends of electrodes are substantially flush with walls of the at least one combustion chamber. A fir st voltage is provided between the electrodes to cause an initial breakdown of a gaseous air/fuel mixture present between the electrodes and, later, a follow - on current that travels between the electrodes after the initial breakdown i s provided.
