Composition (A) for treating malignancy comprises substances (I) that reduce concentration of the YB-1 (Y-box) protein (II) or inhibit translocation of (II) in tumor cells, is new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a composition (B) for diagnosis or prognosis of malignant diseases containing antibodies against (II) and/or protein P32; (2) a method for diagnosis, prognosis or treatment of malignant diseases by determining the level of YB-1 expression in tissue sections and using this as the basis for a targeted additional treatment or aftercare; (3) peptides (III) that are MSSEAETQQPPA (IIIa), its mutants or variants, or other YB-1-derived peptides with the same properties and able to inhibit tumor cells selectively; (4) antibodies (Ab1) specific for YB-1 and able to recognize (III); (5) use of (III) for preparing an antitumor agent; (6) antibodies (Ab2) specific for P32; (7) cell lines that constitutively over express YB-1, for screening or testing therapeutic agents; and (8) transgenic small mammals that express YB-1 in a tissue-specific manner for testing therapeutic substances.
