<p>A power line communication system (100) includes a plurality of appliances (108a-108c) and a plurality of network nodes (106a-106c), where each network node is coupled to a respective appliance and configured to communicate information between the respective appliance and a power line using a multi-dimensional protocol. In one aspect of the invention the multi-dimensional communication protocol includes a frequency dimension and a time dimension. In another aspect of the invention the communication protocol includes dividing the information into a plurality of data streams where each of the data streams contains a portion of the information, and communicating the data streams in parallel on different respective frequencies. This aspect of the invention can be achieved by dividing the information into N data streams which each carry 1/N of the information in the frequency band of approximately 108-470 MHz, excluding 174 MHz-216 MHz (used for television transmission). In yet another aspect of the invention, each of the data streams is replicated into an upper side-band lobe data stream and a lower side-band lobe data stream such that each of the data streams contains three coherent streams. Advantages of the invention include reliable and noise immune communications. The multi-dimensional communication protocol inherently provides reliable and noise immune communications.</p> |
