PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst having excellent activity in olefin polymerization, by making it contain a transition metal compound with a specific structure and, if necessary, compounds selected from an organometallic compound, an organic aluminumoxy compound and an ion pair-forming compound. SOLUTION: A catalyst for polymerization contains (A) a transition metal compound expressed by the formula and, if necessary, one or more kinds of compounds selected from (B) an organometallic compound, (C) an organic aluminumoxy compound and (D) a compound to form the ion pair by reacting with the transition metal compound and it is supported on a carrier. Component (A) is used in an amount of 10-12 to 10-2 mole per L of the polymerization volume and is blended in the following mole ratio: component (B)/transition metal atom in component (A)=0.01 to 100,000; Al in component (C)/transition metal atom = 10 to 500,000; and component (D)/transition metal atom = 1 to 10. In the formula, M is an atom of a transition metal in Group 3 to 11 of the periodic table; A is N or P; U is a carbon with a substituent R2; Q is a carbon with a substituent R3; S is a carbon with a substituent R4; and T is a carbon with a substituent R5. |
