PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a microorganism that can produce an aromatic aldehyde whose production has been difficult and which is useful as a raw material for medicines, agrochemicals and perfumes, and so on at a low cost. SOLUTION: This microorganism produces an aromatic aldehyde such as protocathecualdehyde. The microorganism belongs to the genus pseudomonas, and includes Pseudomonas putida BA-29 (FERM P-1745). A carbon source for producing the aromatic aldehyde is preferably an aromatic carboxylic acid (for example, benzoic acid). The aromatic aldehyde is preferably produced by culturing the microorganism in the presence of an aromatic carboxylic acid in an organic solvent under a peroxidation stress-imparting, aerobic condition in a pH 3 to 8 culture medium at a temperature of 20 to 40 deg.C for 24 to 144 hr under shaking.
