PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing steel high in wear resistance and damage resistance, particularly, steel for a rod mill used for pulverizing concrete aggregates, graywacke, coke, slag or the like. SOLUTION: As to the method for producing steel for a rod mill, steel having a compsn. contg., by weight, 0.70 to l.20% C, 0.15 to 0.70% Si, 0.30 to l.50% Mn, <=0.035% P, <=0.035% S, 0.70 to l.70% Cr and 0.01 to 0.30% Mo, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities is heated to >=800 deg.C, is subsequently immersed into a refrigerant tank for 50 to 300 sec, is quenched, is recuperated to the surface temp. of 150 to 350 deg.C and is thereafter tempered to the tempering temp. of 250 to 400 deg.C to control its surface hardness to 40 to 50 by HRC and the center hardness to 35 to 40 by HRC.
