PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a non-detecting state and to prevent an automatic transmission from coming to a stop even if a not-detecting state occurs. SOLUTION: This automatic transmission includes: shift mode change position detecting parts 7c, 32; a driving part 4 imparting back and forth movements in the direction of an axis; and a control part 5 which stops the back and forth movements of the driving part when the desired shift mode change position is detected. In this case, the change position detecting parts 7c, 32 include a position detecting board 32 on which a plurality of contacts each having a predetermined width according to the change position are arranged, and a detecting terminal 7c sliding on the position detecting board in synchronism with the back and forth movements of a transmission rod and outputting a detection signal to the control part 5 when making contact within the predetermined width of each contact. The control part 5 stops the back and forth movements of the driving part 4 after the elapse of a predetermined time since the start of input of the detection signal from the detecting terminal 7c. When no detection signal is input, the control part 5 causes the transmission rod 3 to move forward or backward up to the change position of a reference mode, by use of the driving part 4.
