PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance reliability of a high pressure electric discharge lamp and to reduce the manufacture cost. SOLUTION: A high pressure electric discharge lamp 10 and a lighting device is made small by making a dimension between electrodes 22, 22 small and making the pressure large at the time of lighting of an electric discharge space 21 in which argon and mercury. The electrodes 22, 22 are sealed at sealing portions 14, 15 in the state that a cylindrical body 35 made of a metal covers an electrode axis portion 24 of the respective electrodes 22, 22.
