PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure electric discharge lamp with high reliability and a long life, in which a metal foil is not cut at a sealing/joining step of a conductor and a tube even for a large current. SOLUTION: The high pressure electric discharge lamp is provided with a valve area 9a forming an emission space; a sealing tube 9b integrally disposed at both ends of the valve 9a respectively; an anode 8a and a cathode 8b sealed in opposition to the valve area 9a; an internal lead rod 4 of which one end is electrically connected to the anode 8a and the cathode 8b and the other end is extended to the sealing tube 9b; a pair of conductive metal foil 2 of which one end is connected to the internal lead rod 4 and the other end is extended in the sealing tube 9b along an insulative separator 1' surface; an external lead rod 5 electrically connected to the other end of a conductive metal foil 2 and sealingly derived from the sealing tube 9b; a retaining metal foil 15 winding the connection of the external lead rod 5 and the metal foil 2 and retaining so as to envelope at least one portion of the connection end surface to which the external lead rod 5 is extended; and a cylindrical body 6 for supporting the internal lead rod inserted through the internal lead rod 4, attached to the sealing tube 9b and supporting the connection of the internal lead rod 4.
