PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the method for forming a latent image possible to form the stable latent image with regard to the temperature environments and the humidity environment at high speed and the high resolution. SOLUTION: This latent image forming device is, provided with the image carrier 1 provided with a ferroelectric substance layer 1b on a conductive substrate 1a, a photoreceptor 3 arranged facing the image carrier 1, polarizing orienting means 2 for polarize orienting the ferroelectric substance layer 1b in the one direction by applying voltage on the image carrier 1, select exposure means 9 for selectively projecting light beams the photoreceptor 3, and electric field applying means 10 making the electric field generated by applying the voltage on the image carrier in polarity opposite to the voltage applied by the polarizing orienting means 2, at the time same to projection of the light beams by select exposure means 9. The electrostatic charge is generated on the photoreceptor 3 by the exposure of the select exposure means 9, and as a result of the electric field generated by the electric field applying means 10, the electrostatic charge is shifted, the polarizing orienting direction of the ferroelectric substance layer 1b is partially inverted and the polarize inverted latent image is formed.
