PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To speedily heighten the temperature of wall face of the engine at the time of its ignition and curtail exhaust emission, by delaying the valve- opening timing until the bottom dead center, during the cool period of the cylinder when detected or calculated temperature inside it is under specified temperature. SOLUTION: The electronic control unit(ECU) as a measure for varying the timing, delays the valve-opening timing of the exhaust valve under the bottom dead center during the cool period when the temperature inside the cylinder is below that specified. Since the action timing of valve-opening and closing of intake valve and exhaust valve is completely variable, the valve- opening timing of the exhaust valve is delayed at cool period. Therefore, high- temperature fuel gas is sealed in the cylinder as long as the delay, as a result of which, the temperature of the wall face tends to rise quickly and fuel in the cylinder to evaporate, thus shortening the time needed to warm up the engine and curtailing exhaustion of the unburned gas.
