PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the operation cost of water treatment with ozone by employing a method comprising a first stage of diffusing ozone throughout the water to be treated to oxidize and decompose a taget substance and a second stage of bringing ozone contained in the treated water from the first stage into contact with a catalyst to oxidize and decompose the target sub stance. SOLUTION: A water treatment apparatus is constituted of a vertically reaction tank 3 having an inflow port 4 of water to be treated provided to the upper part thereof and an outflow port 6 of treated water provided to the lower part thereof, an air diffusing nozzle for diffusing ozone into the reaction tank from the lower part thereof and the catalyst bed 5 provided to the upper part in the reaction tank and the space part formed under the catalyst bed is set to a first reaction region to oxidize and decompose a substance to be treated by the decomposition reaction due to the dissolution of ozone and the catalyst bed is set to a second reaction zone to allow a catalyst to act on unreacted ozone to perform decomposition reaction to oxidatively decompose the substance to be treated to effectively consume unreacted ozone. By this constitution, the consumption amt. of ozone and operation cost can be reduced.
