PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple gas diffusion system which is capable of improving the diffusion of gas to blood and preventing thrombus formation by hollow fiber membranes having both functions of gas diffusion and expansion/ contraction in combination and has excellent operability. SOLUTION: This gas diffusion system has the hollow fiber membranes 1 made of silicone rubber which diffuse the gas (gas exchange) into the blood through the membranes by contact with the blood at the outer surface, fixing parts 2a an 2b for fixing their both ends, a supporting member 4 which support both fixing parts and a ventilation path 3 which ventilates the gas into the inside cavities of the hollow fiber membranes. The system described above is composed of the hollow fiber membrane bundle which expands the hollow fiber membranes 1 by applying the pressure load by >=0.1 kgf/cm2 gas to the inside of the hollow fiber membranes and shrink the hollow fiber membranes 1 by releasing of the pressure load.
