PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To diagnose the responsiveness of an exhaust gas temperature sensor. SOLUTION: When an engine is in the steady operating condition (S1), part of cylinders is put in misfire, and the exhaust gas temperature is raised forcedly (S3), and measurement is made for the time valueΔT from when partial misfire is started till the exhaust gas temperature Tex sensed by an exhaust gas temperature sensor attains the preset judging value TEXS (S7 and S8). The time valueΔT is compared with the upper limit T1 and lower limit T2 set on the basis of the operating condition (S9 and S10), and ifΔT is out of the normal range bounded by the upper T1 and lower limit T2, a judgement is passed that the responsiveness of the exhaust gas temperature sensor is in failure (S12).
