PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound which can be used for producing crop-protecting agents and dyes by reacting formarnide with a specific fluoromalonic acid ester compound in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide. SOLUTION: This method for producing a 4,6-dichloro-5-fluoropyrimidine of formula III comprises reacting a compound of formula I (R is methyl or ethyl) in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide, if necessary, in a diluent at an enhanced temperature, if necessary, under an elevated pressure, if necessary, acidifying the reaction mixture with an acid, reacting the obtained 4,6- dihydroxy-5-fluoropyrimidine or its alkali metal salt with phosphorus oxychloride, if necessary, without isolating the intermediate of formula II, reacting the obtained reaction mixture with chlorine in the presence of phosphorus trichloride so that at most 99.9 wt.% of chlorophosphonic acid contained in the reaction mixture is converted, distilling the reaction mixture, and then separating and recovering the phosphorus trichloride. |
