PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment film that is made from a novel chemisorbent substance, can be uniformly and tightly fixed on a substrate, is excellent in the heat stability of alignment and the regulation of alignment, is transparent, can realize a broad angle of vision, can be produced at good productivity, and has a thickness of a nanometer level and to provide a liquid crystal display having such a liquid crystal alignment film. SOLUTION: In a liquid crystal display composed of a pair of opposed substrates, a liquid crystal alignment film formed on the surface of at least the substrate having electrodes, and a liquid crystal held in the cell gap formed between the opposed substrates, the liquid crystal alignment layer is one comprising an aggregate of molecules chemisorbed by chemical bonds directly or through another substance layer to the surface of the substrate having electrodes, and each adsorbed molecule is one having a characteristic group represented by the formula and having an -O-Si bonding group at a molecular terminal. |
