PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To ensure stability of an air-fuel ratio with respect to fine change of a demand torque, and improve drivability by smoothly treating the demand torque corresponding to a combustion mode decided according to the demand torque, in a device wherein a combustion mode is changed into a stratified burning mode and an uniform combustion mode and an operation is carried out. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine 4 of a cylinder direct injection type capable of carrying out an operation by switching a combustion mode into a stratified burning mode for stratified burning mixture, and an uniform combustion mode for uniformly burning mixture, a crank angle sensor 10 and an acceleration pedal sensor 11 are disposed as operating condition detecting means, and a demand torque is calculated from those detected result by an ECU 2. It is decided according to the calculated demand torque whether the combustion mode is the stratified burning mode or the uniform combustion mode. The calculated demand torque is smoothly treated according to the decided combustion mode, and an injector 5 is controlled following with a target torque on the basis of the demand torque after the demand torque is smoothly treated.
