PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing a particulate polyphenylene ether having a narrow dispersion of particle diameters and a low residual solvent content. SOLUTION: This process comprises drying a polyphenylene ether prepared by polymerization in a homogeneous system and characterized in that the polyphenylene ether particles in the polyphenylene ether slurry before being subjected to solid/liquid separation has a particle size distribution in which the particles that can not pass a 10-mesh sieve account for at most 5 wt.% of the entire particles, the particles that can pass a 145-mesh sieve account for 20-80 wt.% of the entire particles, and the particles that can pass a 280-mesh sieve account for a least 12 wt.% of the entire particles; compressing the dried particles, and pulverizing the compressed particles.
