PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound having a structure wherein a halogen atom is introduced in a major axis direction of a phenylene group constituting a terminal skeleton, and a specific group is introduced in the side direction, and simultaneously having an extremely large dielectric anisotropy value and a small optical anisotropy value. SOLUTION: This new compound is represented by formula I [R1 is a 1-10C (halo)alkyl (having a methylene group substituted with O or the like); rings A to C are each 1-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl or the like; Z1 to Z3 are each a single bond or a 1-4C alkylene (having a methylene group substituted with CF2 or the like); m and n are each 0 or 1; X1 is a difluoromethyl group or the like; X2 is H or fluorine; X3 is a halogen], e.g. 2'-trifluoromethyl-4'-fluoro-4-(trans-4- propylcyclohexyl)diphenyl. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reacting butyllithium with a compound of formula II (X is Br or I), further reacting trialkyl borates with the product to provide a compound of formula III, and reacting a compound of formula IV with the compound of formula III in the presence of a catalyst to carry out a cross-coupling reaction.
