A borehole retention assembly (70) for anchoring a well tool within a wellbore, including a gripping assembly (72) and an actuation assembly (74). The gripping assembly (72) includes expandable members (78 and 80) such that upon expanding the expandable members (78 and 80), the gripping assembly (72) engages the wall of the borehole. The gripping assembly (72) includes a pair of expandable members (78 and 80) and a medial member (82), the members (78, 80, and 82) having cooperating tapered surfaces (98a, 98b, and 100) therebetween such that upon the actuation assembly contacting the gripping assembly (72), the expandable members (78 and 80) are cammed outwardly against the borehole wall. The gripping assembly (72) is mounted on a mandrel (76) enabling them to resist rotational and axial forces on the well tool. When engaged, space is provided on each side of the borehole retention assembly (70) such that annular flow is permitted therearound.
