An apparatus and method for producing and selectively introducing carbon dioxide or air into aquaria. The apparatus and method of the present invention produces and introduces CO2 into an aquarium, or alternatively introduces air into an aquarium, in response to the aquarium owner's requirements. In particular, CO2 can be introduced into the water when the aquarium is in the light, and air can be introduced into the water when the aquarium is in the dark. The apparatus comprises a fermentation tank 11, capable of producing CO2, a valve means 41, 42, 43, and an injection means 49.
